THE NUTMEG TREE

HOTEL & DIVE

BANDA NEIRA

The Nutmeg Tree Hotel is a local dive centre & resort in the Banda Islands, just south of Ambon in Maluku, Indonesia. From the location, these islands seem more appropriate as sleepy fishermen villages, rather than at the forefront of world history.

Yet, since the 16th century Portugal, Netherlands and England competed to be the sole ruler of the islands that produced one of the most sought after commodities, nutmeg. Established 5 years ago, our resort occupies an old 19th century house that has been restored to meet the needs of the modern day traveller.

Now, history aside, Banda Islands also offer one of the most beautiful sceneries in Maluku, with the volcano standing imposingly in the background. The rich marine biodiversity in the surrounding seas also offer an equally attractive experience. Coral reefs are largely intact, with great visibility most of the time, snorkelling and diving can be unforgettable for many.

Our hotel is located on the seafront of Neira town, once the capital city of Maluku and North Maluku, which used to be controlled by the VOC, the first Dutch multinational company 400 years ago.

There are many heritage buildings remaining: such as forts and colonial architecture buildings around Neira town and on the surrounding islands. The old 19th century church, Chinese temple, palace and old houses are still in good condition.

At The Nutmeg Tree, we have 3 deluxe rooms and 1 sea front villa with the stunning view of Gunung Api, the volcano on the nearby island. Besides the accommodation, we also provide diving and snorkelling trips, as well as historical spice tours.

Diving

The Banda Islands have at least 30 dive sites, all of which have a healthy reef ecosystem with huge sea fans, sponges, and never ending beds of hard corals. The sheer amount of fish, both large and small, is astounding.

Big fish and pelagic creatures are definitely the most obvious attractions for divers in Banda Islands, such as hammerhead sharks, dogtooth tuna, mobula rays, and many more.

Interesting topography such as spectacular archways in Hatta Island and the abnormal overgrowth of hard corals in Lava Flow will make your diving in Banda Islands a truly memorable experience.

Heritage tours

Banda Islands are located south of Ambon in Maluku. From the location, these islands seem more appropriate as sleepy fishermens' villages, rather than at the forefront of world history.

Yet, since the 16th century Portugal, Netherland and England competed to be the sole ruler of the islands that produced one of the most sought after commodities, nutmeg.

Nowadays, tourists and history buffs alike find Banda’s colonial remnants exciting, from old forts to nutmeg plantations which still exist and seamlessly merge into a cultural landscape, in which natural and cultural elements are intertwined.

We arrange tour packages that will enable you to experience The Banda Islands and its history to the fullest.

How to get there

First, fly into Indonesia, entering either through Jakarta or Bali. Once in Indonesia, there are local airlines that fly to Ambon. If you manage to arrive in Ambon before 8am, then connect directly with the small plane for a 45 minutes flight or take an air-conditioned fast boat at 9am for a five hour ride to the Banda Islands. If you arrive in Ambon after 9am, this means you will have to stay overnight in Ambon and catch the next transport to Banda the following morning.

The small airplane's schedule is subject to changes, it would be better to enquire about the availability long before you arrive in Ambon. The plane has baggage restriction (max 10 kg per person). The fast boat service runs twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 9am from Ambon to Banda and back to Ambon at the same time the following day.
